About The Event

“As good as contemporary folk comes”

That’s not a bad opening critical view. Glymjack is the folk-roots project of songwriter Greg McDonald, described as “enough to remind you why you got into music in the first place” by BBC DJ Tom Robinson.

Featuring Show of Hands legends Phil Beer and Steve Knightley, and Sam Kelly percussionist Evan Carson, debut album “Light the Evening Fire” has swept the folk world, with airplay across BBC radio, Acoustic magazine declaring Glymjack “as good as contemporary folk comes” and the accompanying video being viewed 50,000 times on Facebook.

Live, Greg is joined in an acoustic duo line-up by fiddle virtuoso Gemma Gayner, delivering a high energy, harmony-rich set of hard-hitting original songs and English folk tunes, which has brought the house down at Cambridge Folk Festival and Broadstairs Folk Week.

Away from Glymjack, Greg plays in The Phil Beer Band and has composed music for films including Alan Partridge. Greg’s award-winning songs have been called “genius” (Rolling Stone), “inspired” (The Times) and “captivating” (Q magazine).

And for those interested a “Glymjack” is Victorian criminal underworld slang for a street child who led strangers through the streets of London at night with a lantern.
