‘hard picking sinuous baritone guitar and growling vocals’

Blues Revue – USA

‘a gift for evocative songwriting’

Paul Jones – BBC Radio 2

‘one of the absolute finest guitarists around whether playing slide or driving the band along he is outstanding’

Blues In Britain

Born in London but raised in the deep south of the United States, Ben’s musical style reflects these experiences. His guitar playing is an intoxicating blend, inspired from the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson to the powerful soundscapes of Jimmy Page. This combined with a soulful voice and commanding stage presence completes the picture of a unique artist. In 1992 Ben formed the Spikedrivers, a project based on his love of early blues, and a vehicle for his songwriting. The band continues to experiment with different styles and sounds, and has released 9 CDs featuring many of Ben’s original compositions.

As well as touring with the Spikedrivers and other artists, Ben is an accomplished solo performer and always enjoys presenting his music in a ‘no place to hide’ type of setting.

King Size Slim Band

Mrs Y’s presents Heavyweight Acoustic with the King Size Slim Band

In 2005 Toby Barelli aka KING SIZE SLIM began experimenting with a new sound. A sound fully conscious of its roots but with a new story to tell. Having spent the previous 4 years touring and recording with TwoTone pioneers 'The Selecter' along with other Ska and Reggae luminaries, the sound was always going to be rhythm led, heavy on the bass and rootsy in the melody.

Big warm tones from his resonator guitar with a powerful and direct vocal style became the trademarks of the sound. Add rolling grooves, multi-layered percussion, vocals, harmonicas and myriad shakers to create a heavyweight acoustic sound that shouts loud and kisses sweet.

Performing around 150 shows a year across the UK and Europe built Toby Barelli a reputation as a powerful performer and a must see act on the roots, acoustic and blues live circuits. Shows at the legendary 100 Club, Camdens Jazz Cafe, Islington Union Chapel and Blues Kitchen announced KING SIZE SLIM to an enthusiastic London scene.

Following the release of his debut studio album 'MILK DRUNK' in 2013 , KING SIZE SLIM won both critical acclaim and a British Blues Award for 'Emerging Artist' 2014.

Word soon spread amongst gig go-ers and bookers alike that KING SIZE SLIM was a hot act and subsequently on New Years Eve 2014/15 Toby was hand-picked to perform solo support for rock legends Queen at the BBC event 'Rock Big Ben' at Westminster Central Hall, London.

In the autumn of 2015 a double bill package featuring KING SIZE SLIM and guitar hero Skip 'Little Axe' McDonald toured the UK appearing at Liverpool Philharmonic , Albion Theatre London and other venues up and down the country. The intimacy of two solo artists presenting their individual sides of the roots music story on the same stage proved a great success.

Around an enormously busy tour schedule, recording began on 'Chukka Chukka' the second album in the middle of 2015 with a successful release in March 2016. R2 magazine had this to say "......few artists create a distinctive sound, Toby Barelli aka KING SIZE SLIM has done just that..... terrific stuff" 4/5 star review

Tonight we are lucky enough to have the full 4 piece band

Roger Hubbard

SORRY PEOPLE but due to reasons beyond anyone's control Stompin Dave has had to cancel and will join us at a later date.

But we are lucky to step in at short notice the man Muddy Waters said of
“is as good as any blues guitarist in the U.K. or the United States”

Roger Hubbard

Hi Everyone
Due to illness we have had a change to Mondays gig but we are lucky to get at very short notice a rare gig by Roger Hubbard.
Roger actually holds the record for the biggest crowd at Mrs Yarringtons music Club.

Born in Brighton U.K. Roger Hubbard is one of the major exponents of early blues and slide guitar.  In the 1960s he was playing at folk clubs and continuing an interest in country and delta blues, he started his own blues clubs in Lewes and Brighton.
Roger also opened for Muddy Waters in Brighton. Muddy Waters was quoted in SOUNDS Magazine as saying,
“Roger Hubbard is as good as any blues guitarist in the U.K. or the United States”.

His first album "Brighton Belle Blues" was  recorded in 1970 by Nick Perls for his U.S. label Blue Goose.

“..he could be one of the most exciting acoustic guitarists to come along since John Fahey. Whatever he does, he has created in this record a sort of monument to the full flowing of white blues scholarship...”  Timothy Ferris (editor)  ROLLING STONE  February 1972

Nick Perls was a key figure on the American blues trail, rediscovering the likes of Son House and Skip James.
Having played his 1935 National Steel Duolian for many years, Roger also plays an electric resonator guitar made and designed by himself  known as The Hub
His song “Home Lovin’ Man” was recorded by US blues man Eric Bibb on his 2003 album Natural Light . And do ask me about Mrs Y's "Roger Meter" Stompin' Dave has been booked as a headline performer at festivals. These have included The Cornwall Folk Festival, National Banjo Day, Two For Joy May Bank Holiday Folk Festival, and The Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival.

Dave has made several visits to the USA including competing in the US national bluegrass banjo, and international flatpicking guitar contests.

Dave was winner of the FOAOTMAD old-time banjo competition 2011 and 2013. Runner up in the FOAOTMAD old-time dancing competition 2012.  Stompin' Dave was nominated for a British Blues Award in the acoustic act category 2014.

The Captain of the Lost Waves

We please to welcome one of Mrs Yarringtons favorites to the 4 Seasons.

For those of you who have witnessed an adventure by the Captain will know what to expect, well actually you won’t as no two gigs are the same. For those who know not of the Captain how to describe a visit.

“Captain!!, Wow! That is all. Honestly in the shows I have attended I have never witnessed anything quite like it” said Liverpool Sofar Sounds.

“ Trying to describe a Captain gig is like trying to describe the colour 9 !” is another. Totally unique. Cliche alert ! but expect the unexpected. Everything from folk to maybe a dip into opera, a dash of vaudeville and many a tale of the Captains adventures on the way. Armed with a hugely critically acclaimed album “ Hidden Gems” and a darling of the steampunk circuit and festivals and venues across Europe this is a unique experience just not to be missed.

Mark Harrison

There is no one in music quite like Mark Harrison, he is widely considered one of the most original and interesting artists currently operating in the UK. His highly individual, all-original music goes down very well with audiences of all kinds, and it has taken him to some of the top venues and festivals in the UK, attracting acclaim wherever he goes.

Described at BBC Radio 2 as ‘quirky’ and an artist who ‘makes you think afresh’, and by one eminent reviewer as ‘approaching national treasure status’, Mark is a totally original songwriter, a stunning guitarist, and a master storyteller.

An in-demand live performer, Mark tours extensively. He has appeared at top festivals such as Celtic Connections, Bearded Theory, The Great British Folk Festival, Lakefest and Jazz FM Love Supreme and at prestigious venues all over the UK. He has released five albums which have been unanimously acclaimed across a wide range of areas of the music world, receiving a very great deal of airplay and highly enthusiastic reviews in the UK, Europe and the US. 2018 sees the release of Mark’s much awaited new album, THE PANORAMIC VIEW. Mark’s magnum opus, it is all set to bring him much wider recognition.

Mark is a songster, and his songs cover all manner of non-standard subjects. With catchy tunes, lyrics than intrigue and engage, and striking rhythms, they make you smile, think and move. He takes elements of roots music, including folk, blues and gospel, to create something new that is very much his own genre. Each song is a snapshot of life or has a story to tell, like a 3-minute film or novel.

Here are a few of the things that have been said about Mark and his music:

really excellent … he takes very real things, normal things that happen in life, and he writes about them in a way that makes you think afresh about them’ (Paul Jones, BBC Radio 2)

one of the British Isles’ great blues singers and guitarists, totally and absolutely original’ (Mike Harding)

‘Mark Harrison keeps getting better‘(Classic Rock Magazine)

innovative ……’ (Jazz FM)

‘roots music from the top drawer from one of our most gifted talents‘ (R2 Magazine)

‘with a highly distinctive style and a growing international reputation. Mark Harrison’s rootsy folk/blues sound combines superb picking and slide work, on 12-string and National resonator guitar, with richly burnished vocals and inventive original material’ (Celtic Connections festival programme)
